What is Push Back Racking

Push Back Racking is a storage system that can store about 2 to 6 pallets. It is a high-density structure composed of several nested carts. It is similar to live pallet racking, both of which work according to gravity.

Push-back rack, also known as push-back pallet rack. A push-back rack is a rack system that combines rails and pallet carts, with pallets nested together. The rails are inclined at a certain angle (3°- 5°), and the pallets use their weight to automatically slide to the exit, achieving a first-in, last-out (FILO) arrangement of palletized goods.

But this type of pallet racking is suitable for FILO. Because push-back racking just has an exit/entrance each for loading or unloading products. So you just need to leave one aisle space for forklifts to work. And you can save more space to store your products.

Advantages of Push Back Racking

Push-back racking is a high-density storage system. It just needs one aisle for forklifts so that there is more space to store products. Compared to conventional pallet racking, push-back warehouse racking can increase the storage rate by about 60%.

Because of its LIFO principle, it is suitable for some non-perishable products. And it is easier to load or unload goods than drive in racking for it is no need to drive the forklifts into the racking system. This also can reduce the risk of damage caused by forklifts.

There are 2-6 nested carts in each lane. So whatever pallets you use, you can put them on the nested carts. It can give support for the product’s pallet. Each lane in this system is independent so you can store your products according to different categories. It can make you turnover products more convenient.

Frames: Comprised of two uprights, horizontal braces, and diagonal braces. The columns have a maximum cross-sectional dimension of up to 120*95mm, with thickness ranging from 1.5 to 3.0mm. Prefabricated diamond-shaped holes are spaced at 50mm or 75mm intervals on the columns to facilitate the insertion of crossbeams.

Front, Middle, and Rear Crossbeams: With a maximum thickness of 2.0mm, connect the left and right column sections, enhancing the stability of the rack.

Guide Rails: Constructed from thick-walled steel pipes (3mm thick), the guide rails enable the carrier trolley to slide on them, facilitating the pushing and retrieval of items from storage channels.

Carts: thickened 2.0mm high-quality channel steel, and top-of-the-line bearings, the trolley ensures secure cargo handling and smooth movement.

Rack Guard Beam: Thickened 2.0mm steel tubes installed between the front and middle crossbeams to reduce the impact force on the front crossbeam.

Front Beam Stopper: Thickened front beam stoppers (4.0mm thick) effectively reduce incidents.

Row Spacer: Utilizing high-quality steel tubes (50*30*1.5mm) to connect column sections, enhances the stability of the rack.

Frame protector: Primarily U-shaped Frame protectors (300mm high, 4.0mm thick) are installed in front of the columns to prevent forklift collisions.

Working Principle of the Push Back Racking

Push-back racking is special for its nested carts. It’s mainly gravity that pushes nested carts to work.

When we need to load products, we just need to use a forklift to put the pallets onto the nested cart one by one. When you load a second, the first one will be pushed up until you use all nested carts.

Same as loading, when you unload products, you can drive a forklift to unload the last product you load in. Then the next one would slide down because of the gravity. So you can unload goods like this one by one until the lane is empty.

Design Source and Process

Design Source and Process1
Design Source and Process2

Our push-back rack design process follows industry standards, including “Specifications for Industrial Racks – Dimensions and Rated Load” (GB/T 27924-2011) and “Design Calculations for Industrial Racks” (GB/T 28576-2012). We have obtained ISO 9001, environmental system, health system, and CE certifications, ensuring the highest quality.

Precision manufacturing for push-back racks is vital, especially regarding the coordination between pallet cars and guide rails.

Design and Selection of Rack Main Beam and Columns:
We consider various factors such as motion loads from pallet cars, forklifts, static loads, and moments. The design aims to balance these forces, as deflection control is crucial. Push-back racks have higher deflection limits, around 350/L compared to 200/L for standard racks. Precise control, within 2mm, is essential to avoid pallet car movement issues.

Slope Design:
Push-back racks feature sloped guide beams, impacting how gravity affects goods and pallet cars. Different forces act vertically and horizontally, requiring careful design of beam heights to distribute loads evenly. Generally, an inclination angle of 3-5 degrees is used. For depths exceeding 2400mm, 3 degrees is recommended to reduce impact forces.

Other Considerations:
In larger storage units, beam-column joint stability and lateral stability under horizontal loads are critical factors. These distinguish beam-column structural designs for push-back racks from other rack types.

If you have any questions, you can contact us, we will have professionals to design for you and issue free drawings.

When using push back racks, what type of pallets should be used?

Wooden pallets, metal pallets, plastic pallets, push-back pallets, cardboard pallets – the choice depends on the weight and type of goods to be stored.

What factors should be considered when using push back racks?

A. Warehouse Structure: Consider the available operational storage space within the warehouse and the maximum height of the highest beam in the rack structure to determine rack height. Also, the load-bearing capacity and flatness of the warehouse floor are relevant to rack design and installation. Consider the layout of fire safety and lighting facilities.
B. Item Characteristics (size, weight, number of storage units, etc.): Properly handle the unitization of stored items, i.e., the shape and size of stored items. The weight of stored items directly affects the choice of rack category and form in terms of strength, rigidity, and stability. Estimate the total number of storage locations, taking into account the growth needs of the enterprise in the next two years.
C. Accessibility (storage density, first-in, last-out, storage location management): Push-back racks offer good storage density but come with relatively complex storage location management. They typically support a last-in, first-out (LIFO) management approach.
D. Handling Equipment (counterweight, straddle-type, aisle width, lifting height, lifting weight, turning radius): Storage equipment is operated using handling equipment. Therefore, when choosing push-back racks, consideration should also be given to the configuration of handling equipment.

Our products are certified with ISO9001, environmental management system certification, occupational health and safety management system certification, and CE certification.

How long will it take to receive the racks?

On average, it takes 20-25 days. Customized products may require additional time.

What services do you provide for push back racks?

Depending on your requirements, we offer comprehensive services, including free consultation, free design drawings, free samples, complete installation services, and professional after-sales support with a 10-year warranty.

What is the load capacity of push back racks?

Each pallet can carry a maximum load of 1500kg, and with a maximum depth of 5 pallets, the load capacity per level of push-back racks is 7500kg.

What should be considered when using push-back racks?

Installation and Commissioning: Proper installation and commissioning are essential for smooth operation. The coordination between the wheels of the push-back trolley and the rail beams is crucial.
Warehouse Temperature: Warehouse temperature can affect the lubricating grease inside the bearings. Different temperature conditions can result in variations in the viscosity of the lubricating grease, directly impacting the friction characteristics of the bearings.
Correct Placement of Goods: To prevent an imbalance of the center of gravity of goods on the trolley and uneven loads on the support wheels, ensure uniform weight distribution when storing goods. Loading different weights of pallets in the same lane can cause problems when the heavier pallet pushes the lighter ones, creating a safety risk.
Regular Track Inspection: Ensure that the tracks are clear of debris (e.g., wood, metal pieces).
Speed Control when Accessing Pallets: During storage, slowly push the pallets to the back of the rack to ensure smooth operation. When retrieving goods, remove them slowly to prevent acceleration that could cause safety issues.
