How Does Gravity Flow Racks Work?
Gravity flow racks work according to gravity. It has inclined rails and rollers. The goods can slop on the rollers by gravity.
The goods are loaded into the system at the higher end of the rack. Use the forklift to put goods at the entrance then the goods can slop down along with the rail to replenish the empty place.
When you unload one pallet or carton, the nest one would slop down to the forefront. Then you can move them one by one, which is known for the FIFO storage system.
Main Components of Gravity Flow Racks

Frame: The frame is one of the basic components of the structure. It is made up of uprights, bracing, base plates, and some floor-fixing elements.
Beam: Beams are installed horizontally. They join the frames together and support to loading of goods. In gravity flow racks, the beams support the rollers so that goods can move in the system.
Pallet guidance: It helps operators avoid veering from their correct course when dumping unit loads onto the roller bed. Moreover, they prevent potential impacts from damaging the structure.
Rollers: It is an essential element in gravity flow racks. It makes the whole system to be FIFO. Pallets or cartons can move from the high end by the gravity on rollers.
Roller Tracks: Manufactured from high-strength, thick-walled steel pipes (3mm thickness), these tracks are connected to the beams and typically have a gradient of 3°-5°.
A Pallet Separator: Installed at the end of the rack’s exit, it isolates adjacent goods within the same lane. When the first item is removed, the following item can then be moved to the exit’s linkage mechanism.
Brake rollers: It is a safety element placed along the roller bed. It controls the speed of one unit pallet from one end of the frame to the other.
Pallet backstops: This is the component located at the end of the roller conveyor. It is possible to stop the movement of the pallet. This means that the pallet has reached the foremost position and is ready to be removed.

Gravity shelving, due to its inherent characteristics, places higher demands on the stability and safety of the entire structure when pallets slide from a height. Our professional engineers have implemented many protective measures by national standards to prevent risks. The specifics are as follows:
Rollers: We use a series of D60*2-12 elastic shaft-mounted rollers with galvanized surface treatment, which are wear-resistant and increase their lifespan.
Damping Rollers (Speed Controllers): These are placed on the track along with the rollers and are primarily used to prevent items in the gravity shelving from accelerating due to gravity. The heavier the item, the higher the speed, and the greater the braking force provided by the damping rollers. This ensures that items move slowly along the track at a stable speed of no more than 0.3 meters per second, ensuring the safety of both the items and the operators.
Beams: The front and rear beams are connected to the columns using thickened high-quality angle steel (10mm thick), while the middle beam uses high-quality box beams. This enhances the overall stability of the shelving while effectively supporting the roller brackets.
Roller Brackets: We use 80*40*3.0 C-shape cold rolled steel, with high-strength and thickened steel pipes (3mm thick) to provide stronger support for the rollers. Sturdy track brackets ensure that the rollers do not deform during operation.
Guide Plates: These limit the pallets to the correct position when forklifts place goods, preventing unexpected sliding or falling of goods during movement, thereby improving operational safety.
Separators: These separate adjacent goods at the delivery point, ensuring that the next item can only move to the delivery point after the first item has been removed. This prevents interference and cross-effects between goods, ensuring that each item can be smoothly extracted at the right time, improving the smoothness of the delivery process.
Frame Protecter: A thicker and higher Frame Protecter (4.0mm thick) provides an additional protective layer for the shelving, preventing damage and deformation caused by forklift collisions with the shelving.
Leveling plates: Installed at the base of the frame using high-quality expansion bolts, these allow for the adjustment of the shelving’s tilt angle, ensuring the smooth movement of goods.

Following logistics industry standards WB/T 1074-2018 and “Industrial Rack Specifications” (GB/T 27924-2011), we’ve professionally designed our gravity racks. We use an epoxy resin powder electrostatic spraying process with a 60-80 micrometer thick coating, meeting hardness and corrosion resistance requirements (GB6739-86 and GB177-91). We emphasize the width-to-thickness ratio in component design, crucial for load-bearing, plastic deformation, ductility, and energy absorption. These factors ensure our racks meet safety, reliability, and seismic standards while handling loads and external forces.
Load the rated load on each layer of the shelf roller conveyor, holding the load for at least 1 hour. Measure the deformation at the top of the frame in the depth direction and the width direction of the shelf with a plumb bob and a steel ruler, and record the maximum deformation value,amax.

The total depth of the rack (i.e., the length of the tracks) should not be too large. In theory, the longer the track, the larger the storage space for individual items. However, tracks should not be excessively long, as this can affect the sliding of goods. If there are not enough goods, the distance from loading to unloading is too long, and the speed can become very fast, increasing the risk of overturning.
