Types of Cantilever Pallet Racks
There are two main types of cantilever racking.
Heavy-duty Cantilever Racks
Heavy-duty cantilever solutions are best for solid and bulky goods. They have special uprights, brace sets, and arms. The heavy-duty type can be erected from 8 feet to 20 feet maximum. The arms can be inclined or straight made with 7 to 10-gauge steel to hold around 4000 pounds with a maximum length between 54 and 60 inches. Brace sets come separately depending on your selected uprights and arms. For instance, if you are installing a cantilever system that is 20 feet tall with 48 inches of arm’s length. Then, you may only need a single set of braces.

Uprights
Uprights are an essential part of a cantilever storage rack system. They are installed with the bases, which makes the entire system robust. Uprights are divided into single-sided and double-sided types, made from high-quality Q235 cold-rolled steel as raw material, with a hole spacing of 100mm. The cantilever arms can be adjusted vertically based on hole spacing units.
Beams
Beams, also called arms in cantilever steel racks, act as levels for storing goods. They come in horizontal and tilted (2°~4°) types. Light-duty rack cantilever arms are embedded into the uprights, while heavy-duty rack cantilever arms require bolt connections.

Cantilever Rack Working Principle
The uprights and base provide stable and robust support. Goods are placed on the cantilever arms, and the cantilever arms balance the load through the uprights and base.
Goods retrieval and storage are typically performed using forklifts or overhead cranes. Forklifts gently place the goods onto the cantilever arms, where the tilt angle of the arms and the end retainers prevent goods from rolling or scattering. The appropriate number and length of cantilever arms ensure that the goods are securely stored.
How to Find Out the Right Size of Cantilever Racks
Finding Out the Right Upright Height of Cantilever Racks:
Before installing cantilever warehouse racks, take correct measurements of the height of your building. Also, keep the upright height extended for about 4 to 6 feet compared to the top surface of your load. It will allow the forklift operator to load and unload goods quickly.
Finding Out the Required Arms Capacity of Cantilever Racks:
To know how much load-bearing capacity the arms of your warehouse structural cantilever have, divide the total weight of your goods by the number of arms. Also, ensure the load is not uneven when placed on the arms.
Finding Out the Correct Bracing Length of Cantilever Racks:
The length of bracing in this rack is always similar to the length of the total space between two uprights.

Safety Guidelines Before Building Cantilever Storage Racks


It is necessary to install a metal cantilever rack correctly for the sake of safety and easy operations. So when building the rack, take care of the following things.
1. Make sure there is no deflection when keeping load because it puts extra pressure on the arms. To check this, elevate a single structure, fix arms/beams, and keep two wooden blocks. Also, do not leave more than 1/2 foot of space between 2 arms. If there is deflection, it means the load exceeds the distance between two arms.
2. Select arms’ length in even numbers according to the wideness of your brace sets. Remember, most braces are available from 2ft wide to 8ft wide.
3. If deflection is still in two arms, you can add three arms. Also, ensure your goods don’t overhang the arms for more than 1/2 inch.

Tilted Cantilever: When the weight of goods causes a downward angle shift in the cantilever, the upward angle (2°~4°) effectively prevents goods from scattering.
Cantilever Arm Ends & Base Retainers: Installing retainers at the outer ends of the cantilever arms and on the base prevents goods from rolling and falling, while also safeguarding operators.
Specially Designed Cross Braces: Connecting the uprights horizontally and diagonally strengthens the torsional stability of the cantilever rack.
Extended Base: The base is intentionally designed longer than the cantilever arms, effectively preventing goods from tilting the overall structure when placed on the arms.
High-Strength Base Bolts: Light-duty rack bases are secured with nine M16120 bolts, while heavy-duty rack bases use four M18290 bolts. These high-quality bolts reinforce the connection between the uprights and the base, enhancing the overall stability of the cantilever rack and preventing the risk of toppling.

Column and Cantilever Stress Analysis: The maximum moment M on the column is given by the formula M = ql^2 + 2qlx, where q represents the load. At the junction of the cantilever beam and the column, the maximum bending stress σ on the column is calculated as σ = M / W^2, where W^2 is the section modulus of the column. Under full load conditions, the column experiences the maximum bending stress, resulting in the maximum deflection on one side of the rack. When the first layer is loaded, the column deflects, and this pattern continues for each subsequent layer as it is loaded, resulting in column deflection at the nth layer.
Shelf Vibration Stability Analysis According to the latest edition of the “Seismic Design Code for Structures,” seismic loads only need to be calculated in the horizontal direction [8]. Based on local building seismic resistance requirements, this shelf is designed for a seismic resistance level of 6, with a seismic acceleration of 0.1g.
In the formula:
Cv represents the seismic coefficient, related to the site and seismic acceleration, and is taken as Cv = 0.24.
R is the safety factor, set at R = 4.
T is the shelf vibration period, calculated as T = 1/f = 0.515 seconds.
By combining equations (7) and (8), we obtain a horizontal load F of 44,671 Newtons.
